“Banned Books & Beyond”

Personal Project: YouTube video – “My Backyard” by @DoomHippee

·        Independently shot and edited together a short YouTube video on my phone at nights over the span of months. I did not have any subjects to film, so I improvised and filmed various angles of gardens, statues, and lights.

·        The final product was my scrappy opportunity to experiment with self-taught video editing basics and compile an atmospheric, aesthetically pleasing video set to music despite the lack of subject matter available to me.

JMS-215 Social Media Storytelling

·        Created consistent social media content surrounding banned books across multiple platforms including YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Garnered over 8 followers and 150+ likes across these platforms.

·        Interviewed the Midnight Oil bookstore’s manager for quotes in my project. I also experimented with live social media coverage of the Midnight Oil’s screening of the 2025 documentary “The Librarians.”

·        Utilized extended research to provide in-depth, informative analyses for the history of banned and challenged books through posts about individual banned books or sharing relevant info.

ENG-427 Digital Editing

·        Successfully edited and revised a long-form manuscript into a concise final product. The essay I was assigned was intentionally very messy and full of different ideas like communal bartering, motherhood, and the writer’s charity work. The original document was 23 pages, and I significantly reworked it into the most focused and concise 19 pages it could possibly be.

ENG-220 Writing, Transformation, and Change

·        Explored transgressive media and covered real-world issues such as US Bail Bond policy and animal testing. I created zines and planned social media posts to raise awareness for my projects.
